Information on tree removal or tree trimming Permits & FAQ about tree services and HOA

Permitting info for tree removal or tree trimming

Each county and city has unique rules for permitting requirements: some do not require a permit for tree removal, or have a simple and free application. Others only require a permit for significant or hazardous trees. We're happy to help! Please reach out to us for assistance, or you can follow the steps below.

Step 1 - Verify your jurisdiction - is your address within city limits or an unincorporated county area?

  • For King County click here and type your address on the upper left side. A small window will appear: click on 'property report' and when a new screen opens, click the green tab that says 'property detail.'

  • For Snohomish County click here, find the search tab and choose to search by address. A parcel ID will then appear on the side panel, which you can click to view the jurisdiction.

  • Double check with the city on your mailing address by doing a web search either for "do I live in [your city] limits" or for "[your city] GIS map" to find their interactive and zoning maps.
Example for Bothell: click here to find if you're in Bothell city limits

Step 2 - Find their guidelines for tree permits in your area

  • Now that you know your jurisdiction, open their official website. You can either:

    • Click on their Departments list to find Planning, Permitting, or Land Use/Development (different cities have varying titles). An example for Woodinville is the Development Services page about tree protection and removal

    • Or they may have a tab that says "how do I...?" which will have an option for permit application (an example for Everett is the city website tab that says "I want to...")

  • Many jurisdictions have tree permit guidelines listed easily on the site or a PDF link. If you still have questions, reach out to their Planning Department or give us a call for help! (An example for Lynnwood is their tree guidelines PDF)

Does my HOA need to be involved?

This might depend on the location of the tree:

  • If a tree on communal property seems like a hazard, such as having decay or broken branches, contact your HOA to see if communal funds should be used to address the hazard by removing or trimming the tree. If the tree is on communal property but not creating a risk, they'll have their own rules (and potentially an agreement with your jurisdiction) about what can be done if you pay for the work.

  • For trees on your own property, you may want to ask your HOA if they require notice or approval for major tree work. This may only apply if it will significantly impact the aesthetics of the neighborhood or the property value.

How long does it take to remove a tree?

While many factors impact the timeline, here's a general idea for tree felling with debris removal with a small local company like ours:

  • 3-5 hours: The tree is in a fairly open space like your front yard, and is short (maybe 20' tall)

  • 8-10 hours: A tree in the same location, but it's 45-50' tall

  • 2-3 days: The tree is in a tight space near structures, and/or is large such as 80-100'

    • For multi-day jobs, we'll make sure your walking and driving paths are clear before the end of each day, and ensure no hazardous equipment is left on site.

  • Stump grinding can take 1-4 hours depending on the size and quantity, and may need to be scheduled for the day after the removal.
