Frequently asked questions
My tree looks like it's dying. Can trimming it help?
Trimming and pruning can help encourage new growth while removing areas that areas that are using up its nutrients. It's also possible that we'll look at the tree and see signs of disease, and can provide a treatment. Some infections aren't as obvious, or may only show symptoms during certain times of the year. But we'll always be honest after assessing your tree - sometimes a tree is too old or damaged, and it may be better to remove a dying tree and replant the space.
Who's responsible for that tree in front of my house, between the sidewalk and the street?
The homeowner is often responsible for these, which may be called "right of way trees," and there are sometimes unique rules as to what you can or should do to maintain them. Our FAQ and Permit page has instructions for checking your jurisdiction, and that will also lead you to maps that show your property lines! Then you'll know which rules to look at.
My neighbor's tree is growing into my yard. What can I do?
You're allowed to trim any parts that are over your property line, so long as it doesn't kill their tree. For most trees, roughly 25% is the most you should trim in a season before it can harm the tree, but it's best to consult a professional first. Different species have different limits or need branches cut as specific points, and it matters what time of year the work is done. If you can coordinate with your neighbor, that's always best. But if the house is vacant or your neighbors refuse to talk about the tree, you still have options.
